DoubleShore Media Cleanup

Find and safely clear unused / unreferenced media in the Umbraco backoffice (v14+ / new backoffice).

Umbraco can tell you what is referenced (the References tab), but there's no built-in way to find and clear what isn't. Media Cleanup adds a Cleanup dashboard to the Media section that lists files that don't appear to be used anywhere, and lets you move them to the Recycle Bin — reversibly.

Features

• Gallery dashboard in the Media section — thumbnails, sizes, and honest labels: Likely unused vs Check first.
• Safe by default — everything goes to the standard Media Recycle Bin (restorable); nothing is permanently deleted from the review screen.
• Scan depth you choose: Quick (Umbraco tracked references), Standard (+ a property-value scan that catches media IDs stored by editors that don't report references, across all languages), Deep (+ a scan of Razor views / CSS / JS for hardcoded filenames).
• Protected files — pin logos, favicons, or template assets so they're never listed.
• Minimum age — recently uploaded files are labelled "check first", not "likely unused".
• Optional automation — scheduled auto-clean (move unused to the Recycle Bin) and auto-empty (permanently remove binned media past a grace period). Both off unless you enable them.
• Non-technical friendly, English + Portuguese, native Umbraco (UUI) styling.

Install

Install the DoubleShore.Kit.MediaCleanup NuGet package, then run the Kit content sync so the backoffice assets land on disk:

Open the backoffice → Media → Cleanup. Access is gated to users with the Media section.

Notes

• Detection is only as good as what the site exposes. Media referenced solely from external systems, or by editors that store IDs in ways the scans can't see, may show as unused — which is why the tool labels uncertainty as Check first and never hard-deletes from the review screen.
• The only irreversible step is the opt-in auto-empty; its grace period is the safety net.
